A former Toronto mayor, John Tory, has decided not to run for re-election, citing the need to protect his family from the harsh realities of political life. In a heartfelt statement, Tory reflected on his time as mayor, describing it as an honor and emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the office. The decision not to run again was a difficult one, but Tory explained that he couldn't put his loved ones through the inevitable attacks on his personal life. He acknowledged the brutal nature of politics and asked for understanding rather than sympathy.
"I'm not seeking pity," Tory said. "I took responsibility for my actions by resigning, and I know politics can be unforgiving. But I ask for your empathy and recognition of the sacrifices public office demands."

"They were right, and I needed to hear it from them," Tory confessed.

"If I were running, these would be my priorities," Tory stated.
The municipal election is scheduled for October 26, and while Tory is not endorsing any candidates, he is keen to see someone who can effectively negotiate with the provincial government and address the city's economic challenges.
And here's where it gets interesting: the current integrity commissioner, Jonathan Batty, found that Tory had violated the council's code of conduct in his relationship with a staffer. However, no penalty was recommended as sanctions are typically reserved for those currently in office.
