Heatwaves in South Asia are becoming a regular occurrence, posing a significant threat to public health and the environment. This is according to a recent study by the World Weather Attribution, which found that climate change has tripled the likelihood of such heatwaves and is causing them to become longer and more intense. The study examined a prolonged period of extreme heat in India and Pakistan between mid-April and early May, when temperatures reached over 46C in several cities, leading to at least 47 heat-related deaths. The findings highlight the urgent need for action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect vulnerable populations from heat stress. The study also noted that the greatest acceleration in heatwave events is happening in April, earlier in the season than expected, which is particularly dangerous as populations have not yet acclimatised. This is especially true for outdoor workers, daily wage earners, people living in informal housing without cooling, older adults, and women, who are the most exposed and vulnerable to heat stress. The study's findings underscore the importance of implementing effective heat action plans and expanding social protection measures to address the disproportionate impact of heatwaves on vulnerable populations. Additionally, the study highlights the need for a more comprehensive response to heatwaves, including the formal classification of heatwaves as a notified disaster, which could unlock disaster relief funding and enable a more effective response. Overall, the study's findings emphasize the need for urgent action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect vulnerable populations from heat stress in South Asia.
